ABOUT

DoKa - Dutch abbreviation for Donkere Kamer, meaning photography darkroom

Mokum - Affectionate nickname for Amsterdam, derived from the Yiddish word makom meaning "place" or "city”

Simon van Steenis is a an analogue photographer, visual artist, & maker born in Breda (1991) and based out of Amsterdam, NL.

In his early teens he fixed up his father’s old Puch moped from the 1960’s whilst starting to develop a taste for analogue photography. These two passions eventually began to intertwine and trips on the mopeds slowly built up to longer expeditions and greater distances, from afternoon excursions to weekend trips all the while camera in hand. Making friends along the way, he became part of a lively biker scene throughout The Netherlands and Belgium.

Taken under the wing of older and more experienced bikers with a taste for art, design, music and DIY, Simon got involved in the alternative scene of Amsterdam, helping out during events and documenting them with his camera.

After studying fine arts at AKV St. Joost, trips on the moped turned into a four-month travel through Southern Europe all the way to North Africa. During this period he lived out of a backpack and camped in varied landscapes, moving with a group of fellow moped enthusiasts.

After a long stay in the squats of Madrid he decided to head back to the Netherlands to settle in Amsterdam where he got involved in several community-based darkrooms; Xposed Lab, NDSM Treehouse, Kunstlicht and Broedplaats Lely. Now equipped with over 20 years of experience in filmphotography, analog printmaking, filmprocessing and darkroom techniques.
